Tips for English to Georgian translation
Georgian has its own unique alphabet (Mkhedruli) with 33 letters that look unlike any other writing system. It was created in the 5th century and has no uppercase or lowercase distinction. Every letter represents exactly one sound.
Georgian grammar uses a case system with seven cases (nominative, ergative, dative, genitive, instrumental, adverbial, vocative). Uniquely, Georgian uses the ergative case for the subject of transitive verbs in some tenses, a feature shared with Basque but rare globally.
Georgian allows extraordinarily complex consonant clusters. The word გვპრცქვნი (gvprtskvni = you peel us) has eight consonants in a row. This is a natural feature of the language, not an exception.
Georgian verbs are highly polysynthetic, with prefixes and suffixes encoding subject, object, tense, mood, and version (who benefits from the action). A single verb form can carry as much information as an entire English clause.
About the Georgian language
Georgian belongs to the Kartvelian language family, which has no proven relationship to any other language family in the world. It is one of the few truly isolated language families. Georgia has about 3.7 million people, and Georgian is the only Kartvelian language with an established literary tradition, dating back to the 5th century.
Georgia sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia in the South Caucasus. It is known for its ancient winemaking tradition (8,000 years old, the oldest in the world), polyphonic singing (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage), distinctive cuisine (khachapuri, khinkali), and dramatic mountain landscapes. Georgian architecture, including medieval cave monasteries and fortified towers, attracts growing numbers of tourists.
