Answers to common questions about how the platform works, what it costs, and how your data is handled. If your question is not covered below, please reach out through our contact form.
Yes. Every feature on the platform, including the text translator, voice translator, and text-to-speech tool, is available to every visitor at no cost. There are no premium tiers, no paywalls, and no daily character or usage limits tied to a paid subscription. The service is funded by advertising, which allows us to keep the tools open and free for everyone.
No. The platform is designed to work without any form of registration. You do not need an email address, password, or profile to use any of the tools. This decision is intentional, both to remove friction for users with a one-off translation need, and to minimize the amount of personal data the platform handles.
FreeTranslations is operated by Transfree Co., Ltd, a language services company registered in England and Wales. The platform has been online since 2009 and serves a global audience that includes independent professionals, businesses, educational users, and individuals seeking quick translation assistance.
The text translator supports more than 200 source and target languages. Voice translation and text-to-speech coverage is somewhat narrower, since both depend on the availability of high-quality speech recognition and synthesis models for a given language. The dropdown menus on each tool always reflect the current supported set.
No. Text submitted for translation, voice recordings used for voice translation, and text submitted to the text-to-speech tool are not retained on our servers after the request has been processed. The content is forwarded to the underlying translation or speech engine, the response is returned to your browser, and the cycle ends there. Our Privacy Policy describes this in more detail.
No. The voice translator captures audio from your microphone only after you have granted explicit permission through your browser, and only for the duration of an active translation request. The audio is sent to the speech recognition engine, converted to text, translated, and then discarded. We do not save voice recordings to our infrastructure at any stage.
Yes. To deliver fast, high-quality results across a wide range of languages, we rely on established translation and speech engines. The content of your request is processed by those providers strictly to fulfill the translation or speech task. Our Privacy Policy describes the categories of third-party providers involved.
For ordinary use of the tools, none beyond technical request information such as your IP address and browser user agent, which are recorded by our hosting infrastructure for security and operational purposes. If you contact us through the contact form, we receive the information you submit there in order to respond. We do not build user profiles, do not run cross-site tracking of our own, and do not sell personal data.
For most common language pairs and everyday content, modern neural machine translation produces accurate, fluent results that convey meaning reliably. Accuracy is typically lower for technical, legal, literary, or domain-specific texts, where specialized terminology and cultural nuance matter more. For any text where accuracy carries professional, legal, or financial consequences, we recommend engaging a qualified human translator rather than relying on machine output.
We are always interested in hearing about translation issues. While we do not control the underlying engine directly, recurring problems with specific phrases or language pairs sometimes have workarounds we can apply at the interface level, or can be reported upstream. When sending feedback, please include the language pair, the input text, what was produced, and what you expected to see. The more specific the report, the more useful it is.
Speech recognition accuracy depends on a number of factors, including microphone quality, background noise, speech clarity, accent strength, and whether the recognizer is set to the correct source language. The best results are typically obtained by speaking in a single language, at a moderate pace, in a relatively quiet environment, with a microphone reasonably close to the speaker.
There is no daily usage quota tied to your account or IP address. However, very long inputs may be split or truncated by the underlying translation engine, which is optimized for sentence- and paragraph-level content rather than full books. For texts longer than a few thousand characters, splitting the input into smaller, logically coherent sections typically produces better results than submitting one long block.
In most jurisdictions, machine-generated translations are not separately protected by copyright, which means you are generally free to use the output of the Service for personal, educational, and commercial purposes, subject to the rights in any underlying source material. That said, you remain solely responsible for verifying the accuracy of the translation before relying upon it in any professional, legal, or commercial setting.
Yes. The text-to-speech tool provides a download option alongside the playback controls, allowing you to save the generated audio file to your device. The file is supplied in a widely supported audio format and can be used in personal, educational, or commercial contexts, again subject to the rights in any source material.
The platform works on all current versions of major web browsers, on both desktop and mobile. The voice translator additionally requires a browser that supports the Web Speech API for audio capture and recognition; most current browsers do, though support details vary by version and device.
Not at present. FreeTranslations is a user-facing platform rather than a developer service. If you have programmatic translation needs, established commercial translation APIs are available directly from a number of major providers, with full developer documentation and support agreements.
Advertising is what allows FreeTranslations to remain free for every visitor. Ads are delivered through a standard industry advertising network and are clearly distinguishable from the platform’s own tools and content. We do not run autoplay video advertisements or intrusive popups. Where required by law, advertising is gated through a consent management framework, and you can adjust your personalization choices at any time.
