Tips for English to Armenian translation
The Armenian alphabet has 38 letters (39 in the reformed orthography) and looks entirely unlike Latin, Cyrillic, or Greek scripts. Each letter represents a single sound, making Armenian spelling completely phonetic. The alphabet was specifically designed for the Armenian language and has been in continuous use for over 1,600 years.
Armenian has two main dialects: Eastern Armenian (spoken in Armenia and Iran) and Western Armenian (spoken by diaspora communities, especially in Lebanon, Turkey, and the Americas). They differ in pronunciation, some vocabulary, and verb conjugation. This translator outputs Eastern Armenian, the official standard of the Republic of Armenia.
Armenian word order is relatively flexible, with SOV (subject-object-verb) as the default. “I read a book” becomes Ես գիրք եմ կարդում (I book am reading). The flexible order allows emphasis through position, but the default SOV is rearranged to English SVO by the translator.
Armenian has borrowed extensively from Persian, Turkish, Russian, and French at different periods of history. Modern Armenian also absorbs English loanwords, especially in technology and business. Despite these borrowings, the core vocabulary and grammar remain distinctly Armenian, preserving features of the original Indo-European language family.
About the Armenian language
Armenian is an independent branch of the Indo-European language family with no close relatives. It was first attested in the 5th century AD with the translation of the Bible into Armenian, one of the earliest Bible translations in any language. The Armenian alphabet was created specifically for this purpose by the monk and scholar Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD.
Armenia has about 3 million people, but the global Armenian diaspora is estimated at 5-7 million, spread across Russia, the United States, France, Lebanon, Iran, and many other countries. The Armenian Genocide of 1915 drove much of this dispersion. Despite the small population, Armenian culture has produced notable contributions in music, architecture, literature, and cuisine. The language remains a powerful symbol of national identity.
