Tips for Tamil to English translation
Tamil script looks complex but is systematically organized. Each consonant-vowel combination has a single character. If the translator produces unexpected results, check whether the source text has any Unicode encoding issues, which can cause individual characters to be misread.
Tamil spoken language and formal written Tamil differ significantly. Colloquial Tamil drops syllables and changes vowels: varugiren (I am coming, formal) becomes vaaren (colloquial). Translators handle formal Tamil better than highly colloquial text.
Tamil is a Dravidian language, unrelated to Hindi or other North Indian (Indo-Aryan) languages. Using a Hindi translator for Tamil text will produce completely wrong results. Each Indian language requires its own specific translator.
Tamil has a clusivity distinction that English lacks. Naangal means “we (excluding you)” and naam means “we (including you).” Both translate to “we” in English, but the distinction matters in Tamil and can affect meaning in formal or legal contexts.
About the Tamil language
Tamil belongs to the Dravidian language family and is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world. Sangam literature, dating from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, represents one of the oldest bodies of secular literature in any Indian language. Tamil is an official language of Tamil Nadu (India), Sri Lanka, and Singapore.
The Tamil diaspora is widespread, with significant communities in Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, the Middle East, and Australia. Tamil cinema (Kollywood) produces hundreds of films annually, and Tamil music, literature, and cultural festivals maintain a strong global presence. The language has about 80 million speakers worldwide.
