Tips for English to Hindi translation
Hindi uses the Devanagari script, which is an abugida where each consonant carries an inherent “a” vowel. Diacritical marks modify this vowel. The character क is “ka” but becomes कि “ki” or कु “ku” with marks. The translator handles the full script conversion automatically.
Hindi word order is SOV (subject-object-verb): “I water drink” instead of “I drink water.” Postpositions replace prepositions: “house in” instead of “in the house.” The translator rearranges everything to natural English SVO order.
Hindi has a formal/informal distinction. आप (aap) is formal “you,” तुम (tum) is informal, and तू (tu) is very intimate or sometimes rude. The translator outputs polite forms by default.
Hinglish (mixing Hindi and English) is extremely common in modern Indian communication. Sentences like “Mujhe ek meeting attend karni hai” blend both languages naturally. If the input mixes Hindi and English, the translator processes each segment accordingly.
About the Hindi language
Hindi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-European and is the official language of the Indian government alongside English. About 340 million people speak Hindi natively, with another 270 million using it as a second language. Hindi and Urdu share nearly identical spoken grammar and basic vocabulary but use different scripts (Devanagari vs. modified Arabic).
Bollywood (Hindi cinema) produces over 1,500 films annually and has a global audience spanning South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and diaspora communities worldwide. Hindi literature, music, and poetry have a rich tradition stretching back centuries. The language continues to evolve rapidly, absorbing English technical vocabulary while maintaining its Sanskritic literary register.
