Tips for Bengali to English translation

Bengali script looks different from Hindi Devanagari despite both being Brahmic. Using a Hindi translator for Bengali text will produce completely wrong results.

Bengali uses classifiers when counting, similar to Chinese and Japanese. Ekta boi (one book) requires the classifier ta. These are dropped in English translation.

Bengali has a distinction between inherent vowel pronunciation in East (Bangladesh) and West (India). The letter অ is pronounced “o” in Bangladesh but “aw” in West Bengal. Written text is the same regardless.

Bengali text messaging often uses Roman Bengali (Bengali written in Latin letters) called “Banglish.” The translator requires proper Bengali script input.

About the Bengali language

Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by about 230 million people, making it one of the most spoken languages in the world. Bangladesh (170 million people) uses Bengali as its sole official language, while in India it is the official language of West Bengal, Tripura, and parts of Assam.

The Bengali language movement of 1952, in which students in Dhaka were killed protesting for the right to use Bengali instead of Urdu, is one of the foundational events of Bangladeshi national identity. UNESCO designated February 21 as International Mother Language Day in recognition. Bengali literature includes Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and a vibrant tradition of poetry, music, and cinema (Dhallywood and Tollywood).
